Review Sin: The Movie / Adv Films:Set in 2070, this videogame-based, U. S. -Japanese co-production focuses on Col. John Blade: part cyborg, part human, and all cop. When Blade and his team from the law enforcement agency Hardcorps pursue a kidnapper through the city of Freeport, they suddenly find themselves confronting a mutant monster. This first battle introduces a standard, if slipshod story involving a sinister mega-corporation, illegal human genetic experiments, high-speed chases, gore, gun fights, metamorphic creatures, blood, family vendettas, "fan service" cheesecake, and, in one memorable scene, a flesh-ripping teddy bear. Except for the teddy bear, these elements have all been used before in anime from Akira to Zone of the Enders, and usually more skillfully. The "Special Edition," if anyone thinks it's special, includes a CD of the soundtrack. (Rated 15 and older, but more appropriate for viewers three years older: graphic violence, grotesque imagery, torture, profanity, brief nudity, sexual situations) -Charles Solomon.

Review Red Hawk - Weapon of Death / Manga Video:Made in Korea, this bargain-basement martial arts adventure looks like a cross between Dragon Ball and Fist of the North Star-and plays like countless other anime action tales. The land of Chungwon is descending into chaos as rival warrior gangs struggle for power. Led by the evil Lord Seobung, the deadly Camellia Blossoms are running a counterfeiting scheme to destabilize the economy. The people's hopes rest on one mysterious figure: the Red Hawk, a masked martial artist who always appears in the nick of time. But who is the Red Hawk? Could he possibly be Danlyong-the adorably goofy fellow who's accompanying waitress Honglyung and martial artiste Yungyung on their quest for justice? Anyone who's seen a martial arts anime will have the story figured out within 10 minutes; unfortunately, that leaves another 80 to get through. (Not rated; suitable for ages 16 and older: profanity, violence, nudity) -Charles Solomon.

Review Plastic Little - The Adventures of Captain Tita / Adv Films:When perky pet-hunter Captain Tita of the spaceship Cha Cha Maru rescues mysterious blonde Elysse Mordish from some thuggish soldiers, she finds herself fighting a murderous plot to destroy a lavish resort colony. The extravagantly padded shoulders of Guizei's cape make the archvillain look like an ambulatory shower stall, and his defeat at the hands of Tita's unorthodox crew is a forgone conclusion. Although it barely lasts 50 minutes, this slight sci-fi feature overflows with what otaku call "fan service": gratuitous shots of the female characters in the nude. Tita and Elysse get acquainted in the ship's lavish bath, and the extras include a "bounce counter" that tallies the jiggles. Fans praise the film for preserving the style of designer Satoshi Urushibara, who specializes in cheesecake illustrations, and the airbrushed look of the girls' nubile flesh has been lovingly translated to cels. Suggested 15+: Violence, extensive nudity. -Charles Solomon.

Review Samurai Showdown: The Motion Picture / Adv Films:Despite its title, Samurai Showdown is actually a series based on an SNK video game that was re-edited into this longer format. During a rebellion against the Shogun, six "Holy Warriors" were betrayed by their seventh comrade, Schiro, who became Amakusa, the servant of an evil god. One hundred years later, five of the warriors-Charlotte, Wan Fu, Nakoruru, Galford, and Tam Tam-have been reborn and become aware of their identities. They're searching for the sixth warrior, who turns out to be the good-natured galoot Haohmaru. Amakusa's forces destroy his home village, causing Haohmaru to awaken to his destiny. The reunited Warriors join the people's revolt against the Shoguns, who have become puppets of Amakusa. The hokey dialogue and over-the-top vocal performances only weaken the already flimsy plot of this silly martial arts fantasy. (Rated 12 and older: violence, alcohol use, minor profanity) -Charles Solomon One hundred years after their deaths, six legendary holy warriors are reborn to seek justice against the former comrade who betrayed them into the hands of an evil god! The six warriors search the feudal province of Edo questing for the last Saint Soldier, Haohmaru, and their sworn nemesis Shirou Amakusa. Will the followers of the divine light triumph over the forces of darkness, or is history destined to repeat itself? Before their hundred-year journey has ended, six samurai will prove that the only thing stronger than their holy blades is the steel of their wills!.

Review Wing Chun / Image Entertainment:Asia's top action actress Michelle Yeoh plays martial-arts legend Yip Wing Chun (the lone female Shaolin Temple student, who created her own style of kung fu) in this farcical action comedy. In their village, Wing Chun and her Auntie Abacus (King Dan Yuen) make a formidable team. Abacus is a shrewd and sharp-tongued businesswoman while Wing Chun (who developed her martial-arts skills to be less attractive to men) is known as a topnotch fighter. When a beautiful widow named Charmy (Catherine Yan) rolls into town and is taken in by the duo, their tofu business booms with customers fighting to catch a glimpse of her. But Charmy also grabs the attention of loutish bandits, who decide they'll steal her for a wife. More of a gender comedy than an accurate historical film (Yeoh doesn't actually perform the fighting style made famous by her character), Wing Chun is a combination of sitcom-style mistaken identity antics and kung fu action sequences. It lightly turns the gender politics of the traditional patriarchal China on their ear, as the female leads are always a step ahead of the men. Yeoh gives somewhat of a straight and stoic performance in this comedy film, which might have been due to a back injury sustained on the set. But it doesn't hamper her from performing impressive stunts, including bouncing up and down on an inch-wide pole like a diving board. And her costars provide plenty of humor to even out the film. [+]

Review Sailor Moon S - The Movie / Geneon [Pioneer]:A wicked ice princess sets out to freeze and capture Earth for her planetary collection. But Sailor Moon and her tight-knit group of gal pals will have nothing of the sort. Paced more for the love story fan, this episode focuses on a handsome young astronomer, Kakeru, who discovers a mysterious crystal needed by Princess Snow Kaguya to carry out her plan. Soon after finding the crystal, Kakeru develops a deep friendship with Luna (Sailor Moon's cat), a friendship that eventually leads to the Sailors' discovery of the Earth's predicament and to each character's discovery of the tremendous powers of love and justice-all in about an hour. Despite its slower pace, this feature incorporates all the positive qualities other Sailor Moon episodes share: sharp, eye-catching artwork; humorous but heartfelt communication among the girls; an understandable plot line; and plenty of flashy transforming. Further enhancements include an intelligent soundtrack (a nice balance of kooky sci-fi and seriously beautiful tunes) and the introduction of the "Outer Senshi. " This slightly older, more mature group of young women-Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto-join our regular band of bubble-spraying, crescent-beaming skirt tossers to melt the ice princess once and for all. The dubbed movie (tagged with the new title of Hearts in Ice) is an edited version of the subtitled film. Some language and violence (a few frames) have been altered. Due to the inclusion of mild nudity (imagine a spinning, naked Barbie), parents may want to think twice before offering this movie to fans younger than 6. [+]
The DVD is of the uncut version but also has the English language dialogue. -Liane Thomas As Serena and her friends enjoy Christmas vacation, an unusual and fierce snowstorm hits town. The evil Snow Queen Kaguya has returned to claim Earth as her own. Crucial to Queen Kaguya's plan is a magical crystal from outer space, approaching Earth disguised as a comet. Once she gets hold of the crystal, she will have the power to suck away all life energy and cover the Earth in ice. Will Sailor Moon find the crystal before Queen Kaguya? Will her powers be enough to save the Earth from permanent winter? All hope lies with the Legendary Ultimate Scout Power!.

Review Pather Panchali / Sony Pictures:Pather Panchali tells the story of a family inching slowly and irrevocably, over the course of several years, toward the edge of financial and emotional disaster. In a rural Bengali village, circa 1919, Harihar (Kanu Bannerjee) recites sacred texts and performs religious rites for a living. He dreams of being a playwright, but he must support his growing family. His wife, Sarbajaya (Karuna Bannerjee) must suffer her husband's long absences as he searches for work and the hostile pity of extended family members who are better off financially and socially. Her daughter, Durga (Uma Das Gupta), has the bad habit of stealing mangoes from the neighboring orchard, which adds to her mother's shame. When a son, Apu (Subir Bannerjee), is born, things seem to be looking up for the family. But it is only a short-lived illusion. First films don't come any better than Pather Panchali. Made in 1955 by Satyajit Ray, this truly remarkable feat of storytelling is a must-see kind of movie. Ray reveals a gift for presenting stories that unfold gently, one engaging scene at time. [+]
This film delivers an amazing emotional punch that will linger in your consciousness for some time, not in spite of, but because of its simplicity. The story is based on the novel of the same title, written by Bibhutibhushan Banerjee. Shot in glorious black and white, it runs for 115 minutes. The script is by Satyajit Ray, the music by Ravi Shankar. -Luanne Brown The first in a popular trilogy of Indian films! Pather Panchali is a moving story of a rural family cursed with bad luck. The father is a dreamer, while his wife struggles to feed the family, including son Apu. When a petty thief brings tragedy to them, they must find a way to survive.
