Review Nature: Chimpanzees - An Unnatural History / Questar:

Nature, the eight-time Emmy-winning PBS series, kicked off its 25th season with this powerful episode. In 1959, the United States Air Force captured dozens of baby chimpanzees in Africa, transporting them to Alamogordo, New Mexico, where they and their offspring were to endure a grueling life as the ultimate human stand-ins. From experiments in space travel and high-velocity crash tests, to pharmaceutical testing and hepatitis and AIDS research, to roles on the silver and small screens, these original Air Force chimpanzees and others that followed gave their lives to benefit humankind. Now, a few extraordinary people are working to give those lives back. Emmy Award-winning producer and director Allison Argo (Extraordinary Dogs) narrates this compelling and powerful program that witnesses the efforts of rescuers at sanctuaries like Fauna Foundation, Save the Chimps, and Center for Great Apes to see that the traumatized residents they have saved from a life of confinement and suffering can finally be allowed to live and feel like chimps.

Review Cuba: An African Odyssey / ARTE:

This revealing French documentary adds to our understanding of the Cold War through its least-known context-Africa. From 1961 to 1991 the Dark Continent was a battleground for four competing interests. The Soviet Union wanted to extend its influence into a new continent; the USA lusted after Africa's natural resources; former European empires felt their grip on the area weaken; and newly formed African nations fought to defend their recently won independence. When the latter called on Cuban guerillas to aid in their struggle Fidel Castro stepped in to build a new offensive strategy which would have long-lasting influence on developing countries in their battles against colonialism. From Che Guevara's efforts in the Congo to the triumphant battle at Cuito Cuanavale Cuba: Une Odyssee Africaine tells the story of those internationalists who won their battles but ultimately lost the war. Review Blood Diamonds (History Channel) / A&E HOME VIDEO:

Sierra Leone, once exporting a lucrative 2 million karats of diamonds per year, would fall victim to political greed and become one of the poorest nations on earth-ripe for revolution. In 1991, a rebel army called the Revolutionary United Front began a ten-year civil war, attacking the civilian population, including children, and murdering and raping countless others. Control of the diamond fields was one of the key objectives, funding civil wars throughout Africa, resulting in 4 million deaths. We explore the history behind the issue known as "blood diamonds", fueled by the illicit trade of diamonds, the diamond industry's response, and investigate the possibility of the blood diamond issue repeating. The heart of the story is related through the harrowing personal accounts of Sierra Leoneans, who vividly describe their individual tragedies and struggles to recover after the war.

Review Harvest of Shame / New Video Group:

Legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow is undoubtedly the first hero in the history of American broadcasting, a distinguished reporter who forever set the industry gold standard through his unparalleled courage, integrity and newsgathering excellence. From his electrifying WWII frontline coverage to his once-in-a-lifetime interviews with such prominent 20th century icons as John F. Kennedy, Louis Armstrong and Fidel Castro, Murrow truly understood the spellbinding beauty and power of the spoken word, and television would forever be indebted to his unique contributions. Presented by Dan Rather, Murrow's HARVEST OF SHAME is among the most famous television documentaries of all time. Richly photographed and arrestingly poignant, this long-acclaimed 1960 exposé on the plight of migrant farm workers resonated deeply for a nation unfamiliar with such brutally honest depictions of living conditions that, as Murrow remarks, "wrong the dignity of man. " Smartly televised to millions of Americans the day after Thanksgiving to better tap into their emotions, Murrow's indispensable classic led to permanent changes in the laws protecting workers' rights. DVD Features: Murrow Biography; Timeline of Events; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection.

Review Mein Kampf - My Struggle / Arts Magic:

Utilizing rare footage found in Nazi archives at the end of World War II, this documentary presents a comprehensive and disturbing look at the rise of the Nazi party. The emergence of Hitler from an impoverished crank living in a flophouse to a man backed politically by rich industrialists as well as the German masses is portrayed with a wealth of archival photographs and films. Though first considered to be a joke, Hitler and cronies such as Goering and Himmler soon found themselves taken seriously, and this documentary shows how their cunning political skills, backed with the thuggery of their Brown Shirt followers, gradually established Hitler as a dictator. The eventual outbreak of war is depicted with dramatic film shot by the Nazis, which includes particularly chilling footage of a conflict that was shrouded in mystery until the war had ended, the massacre of Poles and others in territory swept over by the blitzkrieg. The madness and astounding violence that swept Europe is very well documented right up to Hitler's last public appearance, when he greeted boys who had been fighting for the doomed German war machine in the final months of the war. A second biographical documentary, Adolf Hitler, appears as a bonus feature on the DVD. -Robert J. McNamara Mein Kampf (My Struggle) is the book written by Adolf Hitler in which he laid out his political philosophy. Regarded inside Germany as the bible of National Socialism it was an accurate blueprint of what he aspired to accomplish when in power. After its publication few readers believed that Hitler intended to carry out every phrase of his literal program. [+]
In this film everything is taken from original footage and actually happened in our time. It tries to answer the burning questions what happened during this terrible time in our history and how was it possible?Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DOCUMENTARIES/MISC. UPC: 881482309399 Manufacturer No: 93.

Review American Experience: Fidel Castro / PBS Paramount:

For most Americans, Fidel Castro is just an aging dictator with a beard who smokes a lot of cigars. But this superb documentary, from PBS's American Experience series, gives a broad and vivid look at the Cuban leader's remarkable life. Though his childhood friends described Castro as crazy and reckless, they also recognized his charisma and ambition. His political aspirations were cut short when he was thrown in prison by then-President Batista, but Batista might have preferred Castro the congressman-instead, Batista's actions turned Castro into a populist revolutionary whose guerrilla tactics overthrew the loathed despot. Castro's reign began with a 600 mile drive across Cuba with his small army; the scruffy leader was greeted with cheering throngs all along the way, for genuine change seemed not only possible but almost within reach. Using a wealth of film and television footage and interviews with writers, former political prisoners, and political analysts from Cuba and the U. S. , Fidel Castro depicts this shrewd politician's career with an even hand. The documentary appreciates Castro's accomplishments and admires his sheer political skill (he's been in power longer than any other contemporary leader besides Queen Elizabeth), yet doesn't shy away from the horrific means Castro has routinely used when confronted with trouble (shocking scenes of military executions may disturb some viewers). Few political lives have been this eventful, touching on everything from the Bay of Pigs to the Iran/Contra scandal. [+]
Even those who oppose Castro are astonished by how Castro turned this small island into an international force. Fidel Castro is both a revelatory history lesson and an engrossing personal story of brutality and resilience. -Bret Fetzer Fidel Castro has survived U. S. hostility, an invasion, several CIA assassination attempts and an economic embargo. His face has become an iconic image worldwide, yet the man himself remains an enigma to all but a few. Through interviews with relatives, childhood friends, fellow rebel leaders, Bay of Pigs veterans, human rights activists and journalists, this program constructs an intimate portrait of the most resilient of leaders.
