Review Bruce Nauman: Make Me Think / Facets:Visit the challenging world of Bruce Nauman, a multi-faceted artist who believes that the importance of a work of art is in the process of making it. With this philosophy at the core of his work, he became a major player in the conceptual art movements of the 20th century. Using a diversity of media, including sculpture, video, printmaking, performance, and installation, Nauman has used his art to examine the major questions of life, mapping the human experience from birth to death. As in his 1983 neon sculpture consisting of the words Life, Death, Love, Hate, Pleasure, Pain, his work focuses on the essential elements of the human experience. MAKE ME THINK features 60 works of art from Nauman s career, including his early film projections and video installations Clown Torture and Anthro/Socio. It also chronicles the development of a piece titled Violent Incident, which Nauman calls a video sculpture. Whether you like or dislike the art of Bruce Nauman, MAKE ME THINK will make you think about the nature of art.

Review Battle Of the Little Big Horn / Cromwell Productions:An unforgettable account of Custer's last stand! The battle of the Little Big Horn was the last stand of General George Armstrong Custer, a highly decorated Civil War hero. It has become one of history's most recognized battles, and marked the death of one of the most colorful characters in the U. S. cavalry. Custer was desperate to win a victory on the battlefield and restore his flagging reputation. Ignoring his orders, he attacked an encampment of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians along the Rosebud River in Montana, only to find that the Indians outnumbered him three to one. Eventually meeting in battle along the bank of the Little Big Horn river, Custer and the seventh cavalry where annihilated by the larger Indian force. The Battle of the Little Big Horn represented the most decisive Indian victory in the long conflict between Native Americans and the ever-expanding young United States. It would be short-lived, however, as the US mobilized more troops to fight in the Indian wars. This DVD features stunning re-enactments, new footage of the Little Big Horn battlefield as it is today, expert commentary from battlefield guides, and period imagery. [+]

Review Clear the Skies - 9/11 Air Defense / BBC Warner:Strategic response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 is thoroughly analyzed in the riveting BBC documentary Clear the Skies: 9/11 Air Defense. This hourlong program examines the events on 9/11 from the perspective of U. S. domestic defense, beginning at 8:30 a. m. , shortly before the first hijacked jet struck the World Trade Center towers, and ending late that afternoon when President Bush safely returned to Washington, D. C. Dozens of startling details are revealed, including the fact that only four Air Force fighters were available to defend the entire Northeastern United States; the blast doors in the North American Air Defense command center, deep within Colorado's Cheyenne Mountain, were closed for the first time since operations began in 1966; and President Bush assured reporters on Air Force One that "two-bit thugs" would not keep America down (a candid off-the-record expression of Bush's anger). What emerges from this chronological account is the sobering conclusion that America was unprepared for this "new kind of war. " But Clear the Skies also demonstrates how admirable efficiency prevailed under extreme circumstances, as Air Force pilots, reporters, and government officials share their memories of those unforgettable hours. [+]
Emphasis is placed on procedures that grounded nearly 5,000 aircraft to achieve an unprecedented state of "Air Traffic Control Zero. " Actual radar footage shows how quickly this was accomplished, and a step-by-step analysis of the day's events (using file footage, photos, and dramatic reenactments) shows how the protection of America's executive chain of command was 100% successful. With a compelling combination of split-screen images and deep-background investigation, Clear the Skies offers an all-access pass to the complexities of air defense. Among the many fine DVDs that chronicle 9/11 from a variety of perspectives, this is one of the best. -Jeff Shannon The very idea of the United States being attacked by air was unimaginable and unexpected. On the morning of September 11 2001 14 fighter planes dispersed among seven bases were responsible for the country's mainland air defense; four alone responsible for the entire North East. At 9:44 a. m. an order was given that had never been attempted before to go to Condition Air Traffic Control Zero - to clear the skies of all non-military aircraft. At that time roughly 4836 commercial and private planes were flying over the United States and in less than three hours the clear the skies order was fully carried out. This is the story of how minute-by-minute America's air defense as well as those responsible for the President's and other government officials' safety responded when the horrific events of 9/11 unfolded. Discover intriguing personal accounts from this unforgettable day as fighter pilots air defense officials Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta Lynne Cheney and those who were with the President at key moments tell their stories. Review Commune / FIRST RUN FEATURES:In the early 1970s actor Peter Coyote and a group of young artists and activists moved to a remote Californian wilderness to create a new world, armed only with the slogan "Free Land for Free People. " Fueled by contributions from the Doors, the Monkees, Frank Zappa and others, they bought an abandoned goldmine for $22, 000 and named it Black Bear Ranch. Utopian communities have always been a part of the United States, but in the 60's and 70's their audacious goal was to reshape the world with free love and common property- creating a revolutionary movement that would spread to the rest of society. But utopia is different for each person, and these experiments often brought strife, jealousy and sometimes even endangered lives. Featuring actor Peter Coyote, herbalist Michael Tierra ("The Way of Herbs"), and Chinese medicine pioneers Efrem Korngold and Harriet Beinfield ("Between Heaven & Earth"), this acclaimed documentary offers a candid look into the joys and difficulties of free love, nude farming, survival in the wilderness, multiple-parent childrearing and other fascinating aspects of communal living. With incredible archival footage from the early days to a recent look at the Commune's offspring today, the new documentary COMMUNE is a fascinating look at how seemingly small personal choices can create shock waves felt around the world. COMMUNE has become a critical favorite, leading the pack on a slate of emerging counter culture/group living docs that question and revise our perception of 60's and 70's social movements.

Review Project Grizzly / Reaction Releasing:Troy Hurtubise is the oddly interesting man he is today because he was attacked by a grizzly bear in 1984. Out of that came his life's dream-to build a suit of armor that would allow him to go one-on-one with a grizzly. The most compelling footage (and ripe for repeated viewing) in Project Grizzly is the crash testing of the 145-pound suit of titanium armor, chain mail, rubber, and interior air bags. Hurtubise, resembling a robotic Terminator, is thrown off cliffs, rammed by logs, hit by a pickup truck, and clubbed with baseball bats. And he cheerily considers those good days. Much of the rest of the film is tepid, with an almost absent narrative and hard-to-follow monologues by Hurtubise, who uses a fair amount of salty language. The biggest disappointment, though, is the lack of a climax-the $150,000 suit and its obsessed creator never do battle with the big G. It's a real-life Twin Peaks without the creepy dramatic payoff. -Valerie J. Nelson Meet Troy James Hurtubise, a self-styled "close-quarter bear researcher," who's obsessed with going face-to-face with Canada's most deadly land mammal, the grizzly bear. [+]
Troy is the creator of what he hopes is a "grizzly-proof" suit of armour - an extraordinary fusion of high-tech materials and homespun ingenuity - and of his own hybrid mythology that is part Hollywood, part Canadian Shield. His quest takes audiences into a world both compelling and disturbing, full of contradiction, humour and fantastical vision. Directed by Peter Lynch, Project Grizzly explores the territory between documentary and drama, where the dividing line between fact and imagination is as thin as a knife edge. In this twisted nature film, it is man, not bears, who come under the closest scrutiny. Robo-Bear in the Rockies. Clint Eastwood meets Jacques Cousteau. Project Grizzly is a film about overcoming insurmountable odds, leaving an imprint, creating your own legend.
